Learning how to correct a golf hook shot is a must if you want to keep your ball in the fairway. You must fix a hook, as it can easily run off the fairway after it lands due to the overspin on the ball. A fade is much easier to control and keep in play than a hook any day!

Cause Of A Hook Shot In Golf

As you can see in the picture; typically a hook is caused by an in-to-out swing, coupled with a closed clubface, creating a strong topspin (right to left) rotation on the golf ball. The closed clubface is the real issue, as in inside to out swing is a good thing, not a bad one. Learning how to square your golf clubface at impact will be crucial in correcting your hook in your golf swing.

Another cause of a hook shot is the stopping of your upper body rotation before impact, and the hands take over, which closes the face prematurely. If you are hooking the golf ball, a great tip is to work your ABT’s. The ABT’s mean…“Always Be Turning”. I can promise you, if you focus on rotating your body (and hips) aggressively through impact, you will not hook the golf ball. If you are, you have a strong golf grip causing it to close to much at impact. Getting the proper left hand golf grip (slightly weaker) will help correct the rapidly closing clubface.

Getting stuck on your downswing is another cause of a hook golf shot. This is something Tiger Woods is notorious of. Getting stuck means, your lower body gets way ahead of your upper body in the downswing, and your hands, arms and club get stuck too far inside, and the ONLY way to make decent contact is to flip your hands through impact.

Learning how to slow down your golf swing is crucial to proper golf downswing sequence. Once you get this right, you will have a perfectly timed golf swing coming into impact. Your lower and upper body will be sequenced to come into the ball with a square clubface, and just a slight in-to-out swing path.

Simple Tips To Correct Hook

1. Square your clubface at impact. Start by making sure it is square at address, and not closed, or even open, which would make you compensate coming down.
2. Weaken your left hand grip. If you’re a right-handed golfer instead of seeing 3 or even 4 knuckles on your left hand, rotate it to your left to only see 2 knuckles.
3. Slow your downswing. If you learn how to slow your downswing, your body’s sequence will be much better. You will come into the golf ball with the face square, and both upper and lower body nearly matched up, and not one ahead of the other.
4. Work your ABT’s. As mentioned earlier, focus on aggressively rotating your upper body through the shot. That way your hands will never want to take over.
5. Get your right should to come out not down. This is for the more advanced player, as the fault is coming inside too much on downswing, and part of that may be an “over-dropping” of the right shoulder in the downswing. So for that player, thinking of the right shoulder coming just a bit out and not down, might be the ticket.

It seems like every time the proper golf grip is mentioned we always talk about the left hand. We rarely talk about the right hand. I am going to share with you some interesting things about the right hand that will be of value to you the next time you head out to the practice facility to hit some balls.

Learning how to grip a golf club correctly is something you have got to practice to get it right. Lets briefly cover the left hand and then we can move on to the role the right hand plays.

When you pick a golf club up it has to lay diagonally across the base of the left hand from the bottom of the index finger to the pad of the left hand. Listen carefully, as this is how to hold a golf club. After you wrap your hand around the club you should be able to see anywhere from no knuckles to three knuckles. The more knuckles you see the more the clubface will close in the downswing.

Now lets move on to the right hand. For starters the right hand has to sit under the left hand and both palms must face each other. Let me explain why. When you begin the backswing the right shoulder has to turn out of the way as the golf club swings back. As the golf club swings back on the arc the clubface will role open.

If you start your backswing with the right hand across from or on top of the left hand, the right shoulder will have a tendency to tilt and not turn as the club swings back. If the right shoulder tilts the clubhead will not swing back on an arc, it will swing outside the path and the clubface will not roll open.

If the right hand is not under the left it will get in the way of the backswing. If the right hand is under the club as the club begins to swing up in the backswing the club will stay on plane as the right wrist begins to fold. When the club begins to swing up if the right hand is on top of the left hand the right elbow will move away from the upper body creating the flying elbow effect.

I have a great drill you can practice at home. Address the golf ball with your right hand on your pant leg and then bring it up and under the shaft. The golf club has to swing around your body in the backswing so make sure you place the right hand is under the left at address.

Bobby Eldridge

If I had to pick one part of the setup that plays a major role in returning the clubface squarely to the back of the golf ball for a straighter and more consistent shot, I would have to go with the grip.

There is something profound about the term Golf Grip Fundamentals. The key to understanding the correct way to how to hold a golf club is to realize that there is NOT one correct way to grip it.

The grip is the only part of your body that touches the golf club and the grip is the only thing that controls the clubface. Whether the clubface returns to the back of the golf ball square, open or closed, all three of those impacts lie in the grip.

When you grip a golf club the first thing you have to remember is that if you grip it too much in the palm of your left hand (image to your left), the clubhead will have a difficult time releasing in the downswing and the clubhead speed will be reduced considerably.

When you grip a golf club too much in the fingers the opposite happens (second image below). The clubhead will close quicker in the downswing and the clubhead speed will be increase. That’s why there is a happy medium. Gripping the club at the base of your fingers and then it lies diagonally across to the bottom of the palm (see third image below).

After you grip the golf club take a peek at the top of the left hand. If cannot see any knuckles or the first knuckle that is referred to as a weak grip. If you can see two knuckles that is considered a neutral grip and if you can see three or four knuckles that is considered a strong grip.

If you grip the club weak, the clubface will not close as fast as a neutral or strong golf grip. All it takes is a bit of golf practice to get it right.

In closing let’s spend a couple of minutes on the right hand. The number one and ONLY rule of the right hand is to make sure both palms are facing each other after you grip the club.

The reason is twofold. First if insures that both hands are going to work together with the proper golf grip during the golf swing. The further to the right you turn your left hand to the top of the shaft, the further to the right you turn your right hand under the shaft.

The second reason they have to face each other is to make sure your right arm and right shoulder are in the correct position at address.

This can be so frustrating, but learning why is it so hard to square your clubface at impact will help you make better contact and dramatically improve your golf swing consistency. The majority of high handicap golfers don’t know where their clubface is in their swing, nor how to get it back to square at impact. This is critical to hitting straight golf shots for 18 holes of golf. What happens at impact dictates your result in golf.

Some of the issues causing an inconsistent clubface at impact is:

Rolling the face open at the start of the takeaway.

Improper golf grip that encourages an open/or shut face.

Cupping of the wrists at the top, which either opens or shuts the face.

Early release of the wrists (flipping, scooping) through impact.

Upper body rotation stops in downswing, and hands take over and close the clubface.

Here’s how you can make sure you will have a square clubface at impact:

Clubface At Address

This was a huge eye opener to me after 15 years of playing golf and studying the golf swing. Setting your golf club square to the target at address like the above picture. All this time I had it slightly open and didn’t even know it. This is so important. Try to copy the picture next time you go out to practice or play. This is a perfectly square clubface. You are starting off with the best chance of returning square with this position.

Square At Top Of Golf Swing

Having a “checkpoint” at the top of your golf swing is not a bad idea when you’re doing mirror work at home, or you can have a buddy check it when you swing. The key to being square at the top is not having too much cup in your wrists. You can also have a bow in your left wrist which will dramatically shut the face as well.

Take a look at Tiger Woods. This is a perfectly square clubface at the top of his golf swing. Look at his left wrist. It’s not cupped or bowed. You can barely see his clubface, but see how it matches up with his left forearm. That’s a perfect example of square at the top.

Square At Impact

This is the “key to the kingdom”. Getting to impact with a perfectly square clubface. If you can get to impact with your hands ahead, hitting down on golf ball, a forward lean of the club shaft, and your square clubface, you’re golden! Take a look below at an overhead view of what it should look like. My face is square to the target. You can see the hands are ahead of the ball, making sure to hit the ball first with a descending blow.

Learning how to correct a fade in your golf swing is one of the fastest ways to gain an extra 10 to 20 yards on your golf drives. A fade is a much better ball flight than a hook, so don’t fret too much if you are a fader of the golf ball, but if you don’t like this ball flight, I’ve got some tips that may help you hit either a straight golf ball or a draw.

Causes Of A Fade Golf Swing

There are several different causes of a fade. The first, most obvious one is an open clubface at impact. This will push the ball out to the right 90% of the time. Another cause may be an upper body dive during your downswing, which will get you ahead of the ball at impact, with no time to square the face, again leaving it open through impact. An over the top golf swing can also create a fade, as your swing path is outside to in, imparting sidespin on your golf ball. One last possible issue is a lateral slide towards the target with your lower body. This is similar to the upper body dive, in which you get ahead of the golf ball at impact, leaving the clubface wide open.

Use A Stronger Golf Grip

Many times a fade is the result of a weaker golf grip. So for a right handed golfer, that means the left hand is rotated to far to the left if you’re looking straight down at your golf grip. Many times you will only see one knuckle on your left hand, which is considered a weak, if not atleast a neutral golf grip. The proper golf grip is shown in the picture below. Notice how my left hand is rotated more to the right if you were to be looking down at it? This is considered a stronger golf grip (but could be even stronger, but I wouldn’t recommend it), which will close the clubface more rapidly through impact. This closing of the face will correct your fade and produce a straight or draw golf shot.

Square Your Clubface At Address

This may sound like a “duh” tip, but I can tell you after 15 years of playing golf, and currently playing to a 7 handicap, I recently found out my face was open at address. It blew me away, but the very second I made the correction, my ball flight and compression was 100% improved. I was absolutely amazed at how solid I was hitting the ball after I fixed my square clubface at address. If you’ve never seen how it looks to have a square face, take a look at the picture I took recently.

Hit Inside Quarter Of Golf Ball

Here’s a golf tip I got that helped me visualize impact. I was told to focus on hitting the inside quarter of the golf ball. So if you’re looking down at the golf ball, and you break the ball into fourths; the bottom right fourth is the area you are aiming at hitting. This will encourage an inside to out swing which will promote a slight draw if you release the club. If you don’t release it, it will go right.

See the arrow? That is your visual to where you want your clubface to contact the ball.

I hope you enjoyed the above tips to help correct a fade in your golf swing. If you did, you’ll want to download our 25 Free Golf Lessons to help you even more!

The Best Cure For A Golf Slice

Golfers who slice the golf ball are to the point of humiliation. Have you been there…because I know I have. I use to hate stepping up on the tee in front of friends, and worse strangers, and hit the big ‘ol banana ball. What an ugly golf shot! It goes 40 yards shorter than all the other drives, and usually ends up out of bounds costing you 2 strokes off EVERY TEE!

Having been a frustrated slicer of the golf ball for years, I took lessons, bought training aids, and pounded thousands of golf balls at the range (most of them sliced). I could only dream of someone giving me the best, most effective cure for my slice.

I know when someone states it’s the best, it’s subjective and individual opinion, but that is what this golf blog is all about. My trials and tribulations on playing single digit golf, of which I do now, but have a long way to go nonetheless.

If you’ve been waiting to hear my best golf slice cure, you won’t have to wait no more!

The Proper And Correct Golf Grip

The golf grip is your ONLY connection to the golf club. Get that wrong and you will NEVER be able to consistently square your clubface. And a square clubface is critical to fixing a golf slice.

Most slicers have a weak golf grip. One that is turned too far to the left on the clubshaft if you’re a right-handed golfer. This left hand position on the shaft makes it very difficult, nearly impossible to bring the clubface back to square at impact.

The proper golf grip should show atleast 3 knuckles of your left hand when you look down at it, when you’re in your golf address position.

I have taken a picture of a stronger golf grip to show you what it should look like. See below.

Try this golf grip to cure a golf slice and I think you’ll be on your way to a slice-free golf swing.

The dreaded golf slice is one of the ugliest, most humiliating shots in all of golf. Golfers, especially beginner golfers, are desperate for golf tips to cure the slice. The first place to look in fixing a golf slice is golf swing fundamentals. It’s usually in the basics of the swing where you can find a cause, and it’s one of the quickest and easiest to cure.

Golf Grip

Most slicers of the golf ball have a weak golf grip, where the left hand is only showing one knuckle, and is rotated too far to the left. A quick fix for a slice is to rotate the left hand to the right until at least 3 knuckles show. When you do this, it is so much easier to have the clubface square and rotating through impact encouraging a nice draw instead of a slice.

Alignment

This is another golf swing fundamental that most golfers get wrong. If you’re a right-handed golfer, and you slice the golf ball, you most likely aim way to far to the left with your feet line, which creates an automatic “over the top” golf swing. Always try to go parallel to your target with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders. When you do this, you will give yourself the best chance at hitting a straight shot.

Golf Swing Takeaway

Another “death move” in the golf swing for a slicer is the takeaway. Nearly all beginner golfers who slice have a takeaway that goes out and away from their bodies on the way back, and automatically comes down from over the top. This over the top move is caused almost completely by this improper golf swing takeaway. For a golf slicer, the swing thought should be immediately to the inside with the hands and butt of the golf club. This will get you feeling and thinking “inside” on both the takeaway and the downswing, resulting in a beautiful draw…with NO GOLF SLICE!

RECOMMENDED GOLF RESOURCE

The Golf Swing Book by Bobby Eldridge will give you a sound golf swing in the simplist manner possible. No complicated swing method or technique. Just solid golf swing improvement information that is conventional and easy to implement.

Do you have a square club face at impact in your golf swing? Having been a single digit golfer for the past 6 years, I still was not happy with my ball striking, and particular my lack of compression of the golf ball with my irons. I very rarely took a divot, even with a wedge! Not that you have to take a divot, but perfect contact is ball first, then a thin layer of turf AFTER!

I had an eye-opening experience with a golf instructor recently, who looked at my grip (it was wrong) and my clubface at address. He said it was WIDE OPEN! I was in disbelief, but I trusted this instructor unequivocally. He squared the face, corrected my golf grip fundamentals and when I looked down at the club on the ground behind the ball I about fell over!

It looked completely, 100% shut!

Then, when he put me in an impact position, I about fell over a second time. Wow! I had never seen nor felt this position in my life! I think this is where many golfers mess up. They, like me, don’t really know what a correct and square clubface should look like at address, and at impact.

Take a look at the below picture, and ask yourself if your club at address looks like this?

If it does, than you are a solid ball-striker. If it doesn’t, you’re about to experience nirvana like I did!

I am now compressing the crap out of the ball with a piercing lower trajectory that I can control, and I’m getting backspin on the greens!

I’ve added about 5 yards to every iron, and I hit my irons pretty far already, so this was an added bonus. Now I don’t have to worry about the thought… “why is it so hard to square golf clubface at impact?”

Best Resource For Clubface

I’ve come across a phenomenal golf ebook that covers every aspect of clubface awareness in the golf swing. It really is amazing, as I have never seen a book just covering the clubface like this one.

This ebook has 50 DVD quality video clips which is unheard of for an ebook.
