Most golfers know that stretching is a must if you want to hit long golf drives. The ability to fully stretch (load) specific golf muscles, so that they unload with maximum swing speed through the golf ball is a key component to longer drives.

One of the most important things to do is make a full shoulder turn. This is an area that most golfers (especially over 50 years of age) are deficient at. Do you struggle to make a bigger golf backswing? If so, you’re not alone. The culprit is tight muscles that get only tighter when you “attempt” to make a complete backswing, and you’re not physically capable of it.

Stretch Your Core

One of the main areas to stretch if you want longer drives, is your core. This is the midsection of your body; and I include the lower back when I discuss stretching for a bigger turn. This is purely a rotational movement, so any stretch you do for this should ONLY be rotational. Does that make sense? Do a straight on stretch will gain you no more turn in your backswing.

When you stretch your core area, you must isolate either your upper body or your lower body to gain the biggest stretch and improvement in rotation. A great example would be sitting in a chair, and reaching around the back of the chair with both hands. Notice because you’re seated, your lower body stays still, as you rotate your upper body back. This is a perfect example of golf stretching that will get you longer drives.

Dynamic Golf Stretching

Another very effective method of stretching for golf is dynamic stretching. This is movement type stretches that are similar to your golf swing, but you take them beyond your normal range of motion, with a little bit of momentum from the movement. A good example of this (see picture above left), is to get in your golf posture, grab a club on the shaft with your hands wide. Now make a backswing with this wide grip of your hands on the shaft. Bring it back down, and swing it back again, but take it farther. So you progressively go further and further back, and eventually when you play, you will be making a much bigger backswing, an increase clubhead speed, and hitting LONGER DRIVES!

Consistency

Like anything else worth achieving in life, you’ve got to stretch consistently and keep it up to see the results you want. There is no short cut. If it were easy, every golfer would be crushing their drives over 270 yards, but we know that’s not the case don’t we? Golf stretching is an excellent way to fix shoulder turn in your golf swing issues.

Stretching for even 10 minutes daily, with specific, golf stretches will result in a big improvement in your ability to make a consistently big shoulder turn, with no effort.

If you want a complete golf stretching guide, I recommend you read more about our Total Golf Stretching ebook.

Unless your like the crazy golfer hitting balls in the snowy winter time, there are things you can do to practice your golf swing, that will give you a headstart next spring. This in fact is one of the best times to work on your golf swing as you cannot play due to weather conditions. Many golfers don’t want to tinker with their swing, or do anything that might make their golf swing worse during the season.

Since we are mostly talking about indoor golf swing training, there are a couple of critical things you can (and should) do to improve your golf swing.

Swinging A Weighted Golf Club

One of the most obvious ones you can practice in the winter is swinging a weighted golf club in your “heated” garage. If you don’t have a weighted golf club, I would recommend you get a golf swing weight you can insert right on the shaft of any club you have, and it’s like a weighted donut that baseball players swing on their bats.

When you swing this club, you should create a routine, and not just swing it for the heck of it. What I mean by routine is say… 3 times per week, you’re going to swing it a total of 50 times per session. What I would recommend is 10 very slow swings to warm up. Then another 10 at 50%, building up to the third set of 10 at full speed; then here’s where you can increase golf swing speed. The next 10 swings will be at 110% effort, but under control. This is swinging at a speed you would not do on the course, but off the course you are training your fast twitch muscles to swing faster. The last 10 swings are at 50%. Treat it like a cool down.

One last tip with the weighted golf club. If at all possible, do all your golf swings in front of a mirror to monitor your golf swing technique.

Improve The Strength And Flexibility Of Your Golf Muscles

This is a “no-brainer”. You have more time since you’re not playing, and the majority of golfers are greatly inhibited by their current level of physical condition. Focusing on your golf muscles is a very wise decision during the winter golf months. You don’t need to join a gym, nor do you even have to purchase much equipment. You can do your entire golf training routine with a pair of dumbbells; exercise tubing; and an exercise ball. All you need is about 64 square feet in your bedroom, living room or garage and you’re good-to-go.

Exercises for golfers should focus on the specific movement requirements in your golf swing. The easiest way to do that is to break your golf swing down into phases, then add resistance to those phases.

Golf Swing Fundamentals

Working on your golf swing fundamentals is an easy thing to do during the winter time indoors. First off, your golf grip fundamentals. You can have a club at your office, beside the couch in your living; pretty much anywhere. All you’ve got to do is grab it, grip it, and regrip it multiple times to make sure you’ve got the proper golf grip.

You can then work on your golf posture in a mirror. When doing this, make sure you learn how far to stand from a golf ball so that you get the correct distance and space to make a good takeaway.

You can practice the entire golf swing (address, takeaway, top of backswing, downswing, impact and more) indoors, and so you should. I think I’ve covered enough for today.

If you want a head start on your next golf season, you’ll want to download Free Golf Lessons to your computer.

Learning how to improve your golf swing is a multi-pronged approach in my opinion. To have a consistent golf swing is not just pounding golf balls (although that worked for Mr. Ben Hogan), or taking dozens of golf lessons. With the right approach, your improvement should be steady and quick, but I have to tell you, it will take some effort on your part. If golf were easy, the average handicap would be a heck of a lot lower than 20+ wouldn’t it?

The Physical Requirements Of Golf

Strength

Trying to swing a golf club at upwards of 100mph, but with good technique, takes a tremendous amount of strength in your core golf muscles, legs and even your shoulders. In my opinion the average, high handicap golfer is in poor physical condition. And yet they wonder why they aren’t hitting the ball as consistent or as far as they “think” they should. Hmmm???? Am I missing something here

If your muscles are weak specific to your golf swing they will not only rob you of distance, but it will be very hard to have any consistency as your muscles fatigue during the round. 2X2YN9UY6D2B Muscular fatigue is a huge culprit to mishits later in the round. Implementing exercises for golfers is an obvious must if you’re serious about improving your golf swing.

If you’re short on time, and your main goal is distance, you’ll want to focus on an increase of clubhead speed which involves either core golf rotational exercises, or using a golf swing weight on the end of your golf club.

Flexibility

We all know you’ve got to be flexibile to make a full shoulder turn in golf. How many times have you tried to make a BIG turn only to hit your tee shot shorter? That’s because you did not have the flexibility to make that big turn, so your muscles golf tight, which slows down clubhead speed.

All it takes is a targeted golf stretch or two, to really see an improvement in your ability to turn back fully, and to turn through aggressively, but in control. There are specific areas like your core and the back of your shoulder muscles that can quickly improve your golf swing range of motion. You can even do a rotational golf stretch right in your office.

Golf Swing Fundamentals

I’ve spoken about this many times on this blog, that your golf swing fundamentals, like the proper golf grip, posture, alignment and ball position are critical to improve your golf swing. Even learning how to cock your wrists in golf is so very important. Get any of these wrong and you will struggle indefinitely.

These fundamentals truly dictate your outcome. Take a look around this blog, and you’ll find many, many FREE golf tips to help you improve your golf swing.

Golf Practice

You can’t argue this one either. If you can practice smartly, and not just pound golf balls, then golf practice is a very important component to improving your golf swing. I would strongly recommend having a goal in mind before you get to the practice range. Break your time up into segments, for example, putting for 15 minutes; bunkers for 10 minutes; chipping and pitching for another 15 minutes; then full swing for another 15-30 minutes.

It all depends on how much time you have. If you are short on time, you should practice what’s most needed. So if you are three-putting everything, then putting should be the focus. If you’re slicing your tee shot you should work on your golf driver swing. You get the picture.

One of the quickest ways to increase your power and driving distance is using a golf swing weight. This is very similar to using a weighted donut like the baseball players use when they’re on deck. There’s nothing more golf specific than making a swing with added weight. The option is a weighted golf club, but the kind of swing weight I’m talking about is a fraction of the price and gets you the very same results.

As you can see in the picture, I’ve inserted this cool training aid on the end of my golf driver, right on the shaft. Slid it - Twist it and it’s on in a matter of seconds! Then all I do is swing it. It’s that EASY! I couldn’t wait to get it, and when I did, I liked it so much, I know offer it right in my Power Golf Training Aid Store.

One of the coolest things about it, is it’s so small, I can easily put it in a compartment of my golf bag so I never forget it when I go to the range or before I play. And it’s just enough added weight that it doesn’t weigh down my bag too much. So no matter if you’re walking or carting, you’ll be okay.

Increase Driving Distance

If you want to increase your power and driving distance you need to set up a consistent training routine with your new golf swing weight trainer.

Here’s a routine I would have you do with it.

Full swings 20 times a day for a week.

First 5 swings very slow to loosen up.

Next 5 swings at about 50% speed.

Third 5 swings at full speed but with good technique.

Last 5 with perfect technique in front of a mirror.

Golf Specific Warm Up

This is a great golf aid for warming up. Especially if you’re short on time because you got to the course late for your round. Your golf warm up would be the same as the power routine, but I would not swing it at 100% because this is a warm up to “loosen” your muscles to play.

Learning the secret to how to increase your golf clubhead speed will unlock the door to much longer drives that can be up to 30 yards or more longer than before. The key is to find some simple, yet effective tips and golf swing training exercises you can do daily to get even faster results.

There are a couple of elements that can enhance the speed at which you swing your golf club. Core strength and flexibility should be at the TOP of your list. The golf swing requires a high level of rotational speed, and the ONLY way to achieve it is having a stronger, and more flexible core area.

Core Golf Muscle Training

Don’t let the subheadline of this section scare you. Especially the “training” word. What I’m referring to is simple, effective, in-home golf swing training exercises that you can do with a single dumbbell, medicine ball, exercise tubing, and even the big ball. You MUST focus on rotational movements that replicate your golf swing. Doing crunches or straight leg raises will NOT help you increase your clubhead speed. Every core (ab) movement you ever do for golf should be rotational in nature. You heard it here first

Swinging A Weighted Golf Club

You’ve seen them before. Those weighted golf clubs you can make actual golf swings with. This is a fantastic training tool to add clubhead speed and power to your golf drives. You’ve got to do it right though. You need to ease into swinging this club faster and faster. The first day, make full swings at 50% speed. Next day off, then the following day, at 60% speed. Day off then 70% speed, and so on… until you are swinging the weighted club at near maximum speed. When you build up to this fast swing with a weighted club, you will be swing your “normal” weight club up to 15 mph’s faster.

Improve Wrist Lag In Golf Swing

Creating and retaining wrist lag in your golf swing is a surefire way to higher clubhead speeds through the golf ball. Many, many beginner and amateur golfers lose their wrist lag too early in their downswing and have just given up over 50% of the speed before they even hit the golf ball. First off, learning the proper golf wrist cock is essential to achieving higher clubhead speeds.

There are several other tips for increasing clubhead speed but I don’t want to give you too many all at ounce Instead, consume and apply these; see what kind of results you get from it; then come back for more tips.

If you want more power in your golf swing, you’ve got to strengthen and stretch your golf specific muscles used in the golf swing. I can say that every major muscle in the human body is a key factor, but I want you to focus on just a couple to give you massive power and distance quickly. Will it take a little effort. Absolutely! Nothing worth anything was easy right?

You’re fooling yourself if you think that pounding balls (golf practice), taking lessons, and buying new equipment is going to give you more power. Power comes from YOU! More specifically how your golf muscles respond and react during your golf swing. If they are weak or tight, they will respond slowly and very inefficiently. If they are stronger and more flexible, they will respond with RAPID and effortless speed and power. Which one do you want?

Lead Shoulder Muscle

Okay…here we go again with Tiger Woods. If you’re a senior golfer reading this article, do not think just because you are not Tiger, that this article does not apply to you. It most definitely does. Take a look at the area of the shoulder I circled. This is the SECRET power muscle in your golf swing.

I have done evaluations on thousands of golfers, and their lead shoulder is usually both tight AND weak. This saps your power as you cannot make a full turn on the backswing, and that weak/tight shoulder wants to “jump” out of your backswing cause it can’t handle the tension, causing an over the top golf swing.

There are dozens of simple golf exercises you can do right in your home with exercise tubing, light dumbbells, and even a weighted golf club that will quickly increase the strength and flexibility of this very crucial muscle.

Core Golf Muscles

This seems to be a buzzword right now. You hear the commentators use it, but I’ll bet they haven’t done one single core exercise for their games. I like to think the core is the engine to your golf swing power. The stronger you can get your core from a rotational standpoint, the higher your clubhead speed and ultimate distance will be. Improving in golf by stretching your core area will be a huge advantage to increased power.

Here’s our little secret to utilizing your core to get maximum benefits in your golf swing. Do 90% of the movements (exercises) with rotation. Do not do a standard crunch or situp. The golf swing is a turn back, and a turn through. If you implement simple, easy, fun and very effective core golf exercises, you will see a dramatic increase in your clubhead speed, power and distance.

These are the two KEY areas I want you to focus in if you want maximum driving distance. Of course there are other very important golf muscles like the forearms (wrists) and the legs, and we’ll get into that in another article, but for now, I want you to be implementing golf swing exercises targeting the above areas.

I’ve heard all the “excuses” to not exercise. Notice how I called them excuses. That’s what they. I want to prove this theory by showing you a simple, very effective golf stretch you do in your office WITHOUT GETTING OUT OF YOUR CHAIR! Now there is NO WAY you can give me the excuse of “lack of time”. You (and I) sit in our office chairs 8-10 hours a DAY.

I have found that when I stay moving while I’m at the computer my body feels so much better, and my energy level stays very high. AND…my aches and pains are not there when I do these simple golf stretches.

I strongly advise you to do this one and then slowly add some more throughout the day targeting different areas of your body. You’ll be amazed at how fast your pain will go away, and how much BETTER you feel, when you take 15 seconds out of your day and do these simple stretches.

I call this simple stretch the Seated Twist:

Instructions:

Sit upright in your office chair, with chest high and back straight.

Reach behind you with one arm, which will rotate your upper body.

While staying very erect, twist as far as you can go and hold.

Twist the other way and repeat.

Go both sides 2-3 times, holding for 10 seconds.

Benefits to the golf swing:

Increase rotation of trunk for an improve “x-factor”.

Loosen up lower back, to reduce strain and tightness, freeing up golf swing.

Improve ability to rotate upper body over a “fixed” lower body, like in your swing.

This is not some mysterious stretch, as you probably have seen it before, and if so, can I ask if you do it regularly? If not, do it right now, and then a couple of times each day.

This is one stretch out of many in my Total Golf Stretching Downloadable Ebook.
