I am going to give you some insight into why you struggle with those tiny little chip shots around the green. It doesn’t matter if you have a great lie or not, if you will go through these steps you will begin to consistently make ball-turf contact.

The first thing you have to remember is that a chip shot is a shot that fly’s 1/3 of the way to the hole in the air and then 2/3 of the way on the ground. The reason I mention that is because club selection is very important.

A great tip to remember is: when your ball is in the front of the green and the pin is in front of the green you should chip with a 9 iron, in the middle of the green use your 7 iron and if the pin is in the back of the green use a 5 iron.

If you are on the backside of the green and the chip is going downhill you should use a 9 iron if the pin is in the back or middle of the green and a 7 iron if the pin is down in front.

Now that you have selected a club let’s get down to business. The first step is to make sure you are aiming the clubface where you want the ball to start. Once you have aimed the clubface it is time to address the golf ball with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders aiming parallel to your ball flight line.

With the golf ball in the center of your stance place the clubface square to the golf ball. The bottom edge of the golf club should be perpendicular to your ball flight line. At this point the golf ball should be placed in the center of your stance. Make sure that you grip down on the shaft a couple of inches at this point.

The next couple of steps are crucial in your ability to make ball-turf contact more consistently.

Move the handle a couple of inches towards your left pant leg and as soon as you do that then move 75% of your weight over to your left leg. Now you are in the correct position to swing the club up and down into the back of the golf ball.In closing the length of your backswing should go no further than 8:00 o’clock. If you do this the club will return on the correct path with a steep angle.

Don’t forget to keep the handle moving after impact.

Learning how to hold a golf club is one of the key ingredients to a consistent golf swing. We call it golf grip fundamentals. It seems so basic, and yet so many golfers get it wrong (including me). This is your ONLY contact with the club, so you must get it right to have any chance at hitting a solid ball, that goes relatively straight and with maximum distance.

There are two methods to holding a golf club, and both may work for you, but there is one that will give you a nearly 100% chance at hitting great golf shots. One method is the “palm grip” where the club shaft runs high along your palm. This method makes it very difficult to get a proper golf wrist cock. In fact, it greatly inhibits your wrist cock, which will rob you of power and distance.

In my humble opinion, and from doing it one way (in the palm) to the other way in the fingers, I personally feel you need to hold the golf club more in your fingers, to give you a tension-free wrist cock that generates maximum clubhead speed, power and distance.

Step #1

Lay the golf club shaft across the base of your fingers of your left hand if your a right-handed golfer. It goes diagonally from the first joint of your index finger, up through the callus area of your pinky, and then under your pad of your palm.

Step #2

Once you lay the golf club shaft in the proper position as mentioned above, then roll your left hand over (around the shaft). When you look down, you will see your left thumb to the right of the shaft, with 2-3 knuckles showing. Preferrably 3 to promote a square clubface, eliminating any chance to slice or block the golf ball.

Step #3

Now… how to grip the golf club with your right hand. Bring your right hand under the shaft below your left, and place your fingers under the shaft, completely under all the calluses of your right hand.

This is a totally finger grip with your right hand. Take your right picking and put it over the knuckle of your left index finger. With that position, now wrap your right hand over the shaft. The palm of your right hand will completely cover your left thumb. When looking down, you should now see your right thumb on the left of the shaft over your left thumb. You will see a cupping of your right wrist with this grip.

Step #4

This grip should feel very natural, and you should be able to cock your wrists up and down freely with no effort at all. This is the proper way to hold a golf club.

One issue in the golf swing most beginner golfers wonder if they are doing it right is how to cock wrist in golf swing. This movement is critical to setting the club in the proper position at the top, and coming into the ball, because if it’s incorrect, your clubface will either be wide open causing a slice, or completely shut causing a massive hook or pull. Both of these shots will most likely cost you strokes as either out of bounds balls off the tee, or drives that go so short, that you will have to lay up instead of reaching a green in regulation.

The correct way to cock your wrist once you have the proper golf grip is to get in your address position, put the club face right behind the ball as if you’re going to make a swing. Now lift the clubhead only off the ground bending both wrists at the same time, straight up. You will reach a point where you can’t go any farther. That is a correct and full wrist cock for your golf swing.

Once you get the right feeling, you can then do golf drills to get your club in the right spot for a consistent golf swing.

The dreaded golf slice is one of the ugliest, most humiliating shots in all of golf. Golfers, especially beginner golfers, are desperate for golf tips to cure the slice. The first place to look in fixing a golf slice is golf swing fundamentals. It’s usually in the basics of the swing where you can find a cause, and it’s one of the quickest and easiest to cure.

Golf Grip

Most slicers of the golf ball have a weak golf grip, where the left hand is only showing one knuckle, and is rotated too far to the left. A quick fix for a slice is to rotate the left hand to the right until at least 3 knuckles show. When you do this, it is so much easier to have the clubface square and rotating through impact encouraging a nice draw instead of a slice.

Alignment

This is another golf swing fundamental that most golfers get wrong. If you’re a right-handed golfer, and you slice the golf ball, you most likely aim way to far to the left with your feet line, which creates an automatic “over the top” golf swing. Always try to go parallel to your target with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders. When you do this, you will give yourself the best chance at hitting a straight shot.

Golf Swing Takeaway

Another “death move” in the golf swing for a slicer is the takeaway. Nearly all beginner golfers who slice have a takeaway that goes out and away from their bodies on the way back, and automatically comes down from over the top. This over the top move is caused almost completely by this improper golf swing takeaway. For a golf slicer, the swing thought should be immediately to the inside with the hands and butt of the golf club. This will get you feeling and thinking “inside” on both the takeaway and the downswing, resulting in a beautiful draw…with NO GOLF SLICE!

RECOMMENDED GOLF RESOURCE

The Golf Swing Book by Bobby Eldridge will give you a sound golf swing in the simplist manner possible. No complicated swing method or technique. Just solid golf swing improvement information that is conventional and easy to implement.
