He averaged 293 yards off the tee on the PGA Tour last year. Not bad for a 49 year old who’s carrying an extra 30 pounds! What’s his secret to hitting 300 yard drives? I can tell you he has a very late release of the club, which is another term for lag in the golf swing. To improve driving distance, wrist lag is a very effective way to do it.

Focus On Your Right Wrist

To get lag in your golf swing, focus on retaining your right wrist angle at impact. One of the biggest “power leaks” is casting the club from the top. You come into impact with a straight right wrist, with no clubhead speed; and actually this is now what we call a flipped club at impact. There is no retention of power, because the clubhead will no “slow down” going through impact, causing a massive loss of speed and power.

Make A Full Shoulder Turn On Backswing

One important key to power and distance is learning how to make a full shoulder turn in your golf swing. This is not as hard as you think, even if you’ve lost flexibility. Remember… it’s not how high you get your hands or club at the top of your swing, it’s getting your shoulders to turn at least 90 degrees, with 45 degrees of hip turn. That’s all you need. This is not that difficult.

I’ll give you a little “secret” on how to easily make a full shoulder turn. Focus on your right shoulder rotating back and around immediately upon takeaway. This will release all the tension in the lead shoulder, which is what 99% of all golfers focus on when they try to make a big turn.

Simple Golf Driving Tips For Accuracy

Tip #1 – Make your target smaller and beyond just the fairway. I know for me, I look at the fairway and in my mind, say “just hit the fairway” and many times I don’t. By picking a smaller target beyond the fairway, like a tree or power pole, you are telling your mind to hit something more precise, so if you miss it, you are still in the fairway!

Golf Tip #2 – Eliminate tension before your swing. I know this one may sound quite obvious, but I know for me, I will get on a tight hole, and synch up like a not, and end up hitting out OB or into an unplayable situation. Here’s 2 things that have helped me. Waggle your club in the same manner as the swing you want to hit, then place it behind the ball. Without any hesitation take it back and make your golf swing. You will give your mind NO TIME to think about it, and you will be tension-free!

Golf Tip #3 – Swing within yourself. This is a BIGGY! You cannot swing outside of your physical capabilities thinking your going to kill it. This creates more tension and tension will redirect your club “off path” and impact will be inconsistent. One easy way to swing within yourself, is to say you are going to swing at 60%. This will promote an effortless swing with solid ball contact. That contact will give you greater distance and accuracy…so don’t be surprised if your ball goes FARTHER than normal. This will be an eye-opener for you!

The distance you stand from the golf ball will vary slightly depending on the golf club you are using. The longer the club the further you stand away from the ball. So your golf driver is the farthest you stand away from the ball.

I hate to be using Tiger Woods so much, but Tiger has the best golf setup in the game. His posture, knee flex, head position and distance from ball is nearly perfect.

I am a firm believer that your arms should hang very relaxed from your shoulder sockets with most clubs. If you look at Tiger, he has a driver and the white line shows a slight angle from vertical below his shoulders. This is perfect for a driver. I also added a white line where your arms would hang with most of the other clubs in your bag.

You should NEVER stand so close to the ball that your hands are touching your pants. You will have no room to take your club back and to the inside on the takeaway. You will have to manipulate your hands away from your body. With this flaw you will no doubt come “over the top” on the way down causing a slice. At a minimum, give yourself one fist from your crouch to your hands and you’ll be fine.

One last golf tip

You should feel no tension in your shoulders when your in your golf setup, address position. If you do, they are most likely too far away from you.

Every golfer on the planet wants to know the secret to how to drive a golf ball far and straight. Well…there are no “secrets”, but there are several key components that need to be in place to maximize your driving distance, and any below golf driving tip will help.

Golf Driving Tips

Tip #1 Tee your golf ball off your inside heel of your lead foot.

Tip #2 Get a slight spine tilt away from target at address, and maintain it all the way through impact.

Tip #3 Work on improving your golf grip. A strong golf grip will encourage an aggressive rotation of the clubface through impact, encouraging a golf draw, that will land and roll 30 more yards.

Tip #4 Make sure you are lined up “parallel” to target line. So your feet, knees, hips and shoulders should be parallel to your end target. This will ensure a straight golf ball with every drive.

Tip #5 Square clubface at impact. It can be slightly open if you are coming from the inside, which would make it square to your path going into the golf ball.

Tip #6 Swing to a full and balanced finish with all your weight on your lead foot (heel), and with your hips and chest facing the target.

Give these simple golf driving tips a go and I’ll bet you hit your drives longer and straight!

Getting The Right Tee Height

So many high handicappers tee the ball too low. When you do this, it encourages you to hit down on it, which can result in pop ups, delofting the clubface and losing a ton of yards. The proper tee height with the huge clubheads we have today is having nearly half the ball above the top of the clubhead so when you swing through impact, you can hit it on the upswing for maximum launch angle and distance.

Golf Ball Position

This is a big one and should be monitored constantly. I know for me my golf ball creeps back near the middle of my stance if I don’t pay attention to it. This is a killer of distance and consistency. Because this is the only ball you need to hit on the upswing, the ball position should be even with your left armpit.

Another spot that might be easier for you is inside your left (or lead) heel. This might feel WAY UP there in your stance, but you will not only be able to hit it on the upswing, but you will be able to fully get behind the ball on your backswing…AND…stay behind the ball at impact…delivering a powerful blow on the golf ball.

Look at how far up the ball placement is with Tiger Woods. This might be a little optical illusion with the camera position, but I can assure you, it’s still way up there in his golf stance.

Hit On Upswing – Ascending Blow

With your driver, you MUST hit the ball on the upswing to maximize driving distance, by having an optimal launch angle. This is where many golfers make their mistake. If you hit down with your driver, you are losing massive distance. The culprit is getting ahead of the ball at impact, creating a steep and descending blow on the golf ball.

Instead, you should focus on getting behind the ball on your backswing, and staying behind it at impact. And with the correct ball position as stated above, you will have the best chance at achieving it. You will feel your lead shoulder “coming up” through impact which means you are hitting “up” on the ball. If your lead shoulder is going down, so is your club.

Also focus on spine tilt “away” from the target. With the golf driver, your spine tilt away from the target is the biggest it will be. I know I have been a culprit of NO SPINE TILT with my driver at impact. Not good! When your head and upper body is behind the ball, you have an efficient spine tilt and you should be “good-to-go”.

One of the longest hitter on tour is Alvaro Quiros. Take a look at his spine tilt coming down. That should be your goal.

Work on these 3 golf tips for driving better and you’ll see a nice increase in yards off the tee!
