I’ve been receiving a lot of emails lately from golfers who are struggling with their golf backswing. Not being able to make a full turn, and losing a ton of distance with their driver. This is something I see a lot with golfers who are later in life. As we get older, we lose both strength and flexibility, unless…we make a concerted effort to stay on top of it.

One of the key golf muscles to focus on is the rear section of your lead shoulder. This little area is the main culprit for golfers struggling to complete their backswings. I’ve put together a video, with a simple golf stretch that will dramatically improve this deficiency if you do it consistently.

Are you struggling with your shoulder turn in your golf swing. Do you want to fix it once and for all? Making a full shoulder turn in golf is a crucial element to improving golf driving distance quickly. There are some physical requirements to a proper shoulder turn, but most of them can be overcome with a little effort. Nothing in life (and golf) comes easy if it’s worth anything, so realize right now, you’ve got to give your shoulder turn issue some attention to fix it.

Like the older golfer pictured to the left, this is a “false” shoulder turn. It may look like a should turn, but if I were a betting man, this golfer is struggling with distance. He has swayed off the ball, and picked up the club. He has not properly rotated behind the ball with a correct shoulder turn. Does this look like you? If so, we’re going to fix it, and give you another 30 yards on your drives.

One of the first issues if you’re struggling with your backswing, is tension. If you have muscle tension, it will be very difficult to make a proper, bigger golf backswing. This tension can be caused by nerves, or from stiff muscles. Most likely it is muscles that have become tight over the years, that are keeping you from making a complete backswing. All it takes is a simple golf backswing stretch to quickly improve your turn back away from the golf ball.

Another issue is like the picture. Sliding instead of rotating. Your first move away from the ball if you’re a slider is to ROTATE your right shoulder immediately behind you! This will get you turning and not sliding to the right. Once you feel the rotation in your core, you will be able to unwind with a much higher clubhead speed.

Tip:

To help avoid sliding, take a look at the picture to your left of Ben Hogan. I’m working on this myself. See the angle of his right leg? I drew a yellow line outside his right leg. If you slide and do not rotate, the angle from the ground up in your right leg will disappear.

It is nearly impossible to rotate back into a full shoulder turn, when you lose the angle in your right leg. Instead, I want you to picture you are going to turn into right hip socket, while rotating your upper body behind you.

Tip:

Do not pick up your hands when you start your golf swing takeaway! This is huge! I have been a culprit for my entire golfing career, and it has really killed my consistency. Picture that triangle between your shoulders, arms, hands and clubhead. The all move (rotate) back together. When you do it correctly, your hands will naturally (and slowly) come up, but that this is not a voluntary action. It just happens with the proper one piece takeaway.

So in closing, the name of the game in fixing your shoulder turn in your golf swing is ROTATION. And I mean start rotating earlier in your takeaway. If you are a slider, you need to rotate immediately. Hope this article helps.

Once you get your proper golf setup, and implement these golf swing takeaway tips , you will see your golf swing consistency improve. This is where many amateur and high handicap golfers get it wrong, and never learn the right way to take the club back from the address position.

If you’re having trouble with your shoulder turn, and you want to fix your shoulder turn in your golf swing, keep reading on

The modern golf swing is a “one-piece” takeaway where you move the club back from the ball with your shoulders and core… not your hands or arms. We also call this a “connected” golf swing takeaway, that is simple, and puts you into a near perfect top of the backswing position.

Let’s take a look at Adam Scott’s takeaway. Even though he is struggling a bit this year, his golf swing technique is every bit as good as Tiger. I have drawn yellow lines to show you this “one-piece” takeaway. Notice how his clubhead is several feet away from the ball, and his wrists have not started to cock. He is taking the club back with his upper body and core, not his hands.

The ONLY “takeaway” I want you to have from this article is this “one-piece” move. That’s all I want you to work on. I also want you to learn how to slow down your golf swing takeaway for better sequence. In the next takeaway article, will go further in detail and take the club back a few feet further.

But this is critical to get right! Focus on taking the club away as a whole. Do NOT under any circumstances break your wrists to the point in this picture. Notice the yellow lines look like a y? If you break your wrists earlier, you will not see this y in your takeaway.

Golfers struggle to make a full backswing. The effort is there, but the physical capability is not. Making a bigger backswing takes focused training with golf specific stretches targeting the exact golf muscles used in your backswing. This is an easy fix for golf shoulder turn issues. All you’ve got to do is a simple golf stretch like the one below, and you’ll quickly see improvement in your backswing range of motion.

Notice how I’m doing this right in my office with a golf club. I am sure you have an extra club laying around to be able to do the same thing. I like this stretch so much I even have it on the cover of my stretching ebook. Notice the resemblance between the two pictures It targets a very specific muscle (the lead rear area of the shoulder). This is a very tight muscles with most golfers, especially if the aging bug is creeping up on you.

Improving in golf by stretching is something that cannot be ignored!

Instructions:
•	Sit in chair and extend left arm in front of you (if you are a right handed golfer).
•	Take both hands and put on top of club.
•	Drop upper body down against club to feel a stretch in your left shoulder.
•	Hold for at least 15 seconds, repeat once more.

Benefit to Golf Swing:
•	Improve back swing range of motion, allowing for a bigger shoulder turn and generating more club head speed.
•	Stretch back of shoulder for more range, but with-in golf swing.
•	Indirectly improve trunk rotation while maintaining golf posture.

This is one stretch out of many in my Total Golf Stretching Downloadable Ebook.

Click on the big image below if you want to find out more. For only $20, this golf fitness ebook is well worth it!

Eric Jones – Long Drive Champion

How to “Reach Back” to Unleash Your Power Golf Game

Here’s a simple way to fix your shoulder turn in your golf swing.There are some golf holes where an extra 10, 20, or 40 yards more off the tee can make a big difference – like a long par 4 or a reachable par 5.

The question is, “How can you add an extra gear to your golf swing to take it deep and still split the fairway?”

Whenever I need extra yards on my drive I focus on just two things:
1.	“Reaching Back” on my backswing to elongate my swing arc;
2.	Keeping my grip pressure “medium firm.”

Thinking “Reach Back” on the backswing helps you to:
1.	Extend the club away from your body for a wider arc that naturally increases club head speed;
2.	Shallow out your swing arc to minimize backspin and maximize carry distance;
3.	Create an elastic stretch in the “big” muscles of your back and shoulders that are the source of your power golf game.

Thinking “Medium Firm” on the grip pressure helps you to:
1.	Maintain a grip pressure firm enough to feel in control, but not so tight that it eliminates the elastic stretch of the big muscles;
2.	Minimize the unwanted tension in the hands and arms that prevents forearm rotation through contact and slows down swing speed;
3.	Medium firm, on a scale of 1 (light) to 10 (tight) would be a 4.

Before you unleash your power golf swing take a couple of practice swings at 50% of speed. Focus on “reaching back” as far as possible with the left arm until you feel a stretch in the big muscles of your back. Keep your grip pressure medium firm all the way through impact. When you step to the tee, you’ll be ready.
