Improve Golf Driving Distance – Creating Wrist Lag Golf Swing

by · Leave a Comment

To quickly improve golf driving distance, there are a few key things that must happen. Most amateur golfers do not retain wrist lag in their golf swing. Creating wrist lag in your golf swing is the secret to hitting long golf drives. They don’t even get a proper wrist cock to load the club coming down into impact. The most common swing fault is “casting” or throwing the club from the top, losing all lag in your wrist, so any wrist cock you did going back is now gone and wasted.

This is not how you want to swing your driver if you want to maximize your driving distance for 18 holes of golf; or should I say 14 holes which is how many holes you might use your golf driver less the par 3’s on your course.

Golf Swing Takeaway – 90 Degree Wrist Cock

On your takeaway and backswing, when your left arm reaches parallel to the ground, you should have close to your full wrist cock (90 degrees), and now all you have to do, is rotate your shoulders to get to the top of your backswing in a perfect position. You are virtually guaranteed of a perfect top of the backswing position if you focus on this swing thought and tip.

Take a look at one of the longest hitters on tour (below). Alvaro Quiros, who is not very big, and is slight of build, but blows it by Tiger Woods. His AVERAGE is 315 yards! Notice the full and completed wrist cock by the time his left arm is at about parallel to the ground. This is how to get power in your golf swing.

Golf Downswing – Retain Wrist Lag

This is where you either come into impact with a lot of clubhead speed, or you lose it all because your threw the club from the top and lost all of your wrist cock way too early. Now all you have left is a “slap of the ball” with your arms, which by the way are now disconnected from your body, making it a weak “arm swing” instead of retaining lag all the way into impact, where at the very last minute you release it which in turn gives you maximum speed through the ball.

You see the big hitters like JB Holmes, Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods, and even Camilo Villegas with a ton of wrist lag very late in the downswing. The most prominent one is of course Sergio Garcia, and the very famous Ben Hogan in his prime.

But again…lets look at the big hitting Alvaro Quiros (below). Look at his hand position nearly to the ball, but more importantly look at how far back his clubhead still is. His clubhead is literally going to whip through the ball at a massively high speed, resulting in his booming golf drives.

A good swing tip (thought) for most amateurs, is to hold your wrist cock as long as humanly possible. It won’t happen, but if you think this, you’ll have a much improved wrist lag, which will compress your golf ball like never before. Your driver will crush that poor golf ball. Resulting in much longer golf drives.
