For beginner golfers, learning how to grip a golf club should be first on the list. A proper golf grip, shoulf feel natural, with no tension. To swing correctly, your hands have to be on the golf club a certain way. There is a little room for error, but getting the technique down so you don’t even need to think about it, should be your goal.

Proper Golf Grip

A proper golf grip is one that is the fingers of the hands, not the palms. Most amatuers, including myself don’t get ths correct. When you set the club in your fingers, you now have freedom to make a full wrist cock, which will give you maximum clubhead speed through the ball via wrist lag.

I will go into this in great detail, but for now, I want to briefly cover 2 grips. Continue reading below.

Grip

Most beginners slice the golf ball. One of the main reasons is a poor grip that is considered too weak. So for a right handed golfer that means the left hand is rotated too far to the left, along with a right hand that is also to far to the left.

Weak Golf Grip

Weak Golf Grip

Strength your grip to cure your slice AND add more power and distance to your swing. Rotate your left hand over to the left so when you look straight down at it you should see atleast 3 knuckles of your left hand. This is exactly what you want, as your hand will naturally want to turn over through impact which will close the clubface and create topspin adding lots of distance once the ball hits the fairway.

Strong Golf Grip

Strong Golf Grip

Learning how to grip the golf club with your right hand is equally important. You can do a couple of things with the right hand depending on what your new ball flight is. If you are getting too much curvature, you will want to weak your right hand (rotate it left on the club). If you are still hitting it right, then strengthen it (rotate it more left).

In future articles, we will cover golf stance, posture, and ball position.
