There are two types of putters in this world. You are either a lag putter or a bold putter. I highly recommend you find out which one you are and don’t forget it.

Let me explain the difference. Bold putters see the glass as half full. In other words they are able to take most of the break out of their short putts and hit them with a bit more speed. They are also fearless of 3-5 foot putts because that’s what they are faced with most of the time.

You see when you are a bold putter you are going to hit a lot of putts past the whole. That is the result of rolling the ball with more speed. One last thing about a bold putter, they make a lot of putts however they THREE-PUTT often. They make a lot of birdies and a lot of bogeys.

On the other hand you have the lag putters. I have to share something with you that you might find interesting. I am a bold player from tee to green but I am a lag putter by nature. And to take it a step further, putting is the best part of my game.

There are a couple of things you have to know about lag putting. Number one you will be more consistent than a bold putter. You won’t make a ton of birdies but you will avoid three putts.

The second thing that comes to mind as a lag putter is that you can gain and maintain a lot of confidence on the putting green. You won’t have the ups and downs of a bold putter.

There are a couple of things I want you to remember as you decide whether or not you are a lag putter or not.

#1. If you are a good putter whether you are a lag putter or bold putter-DO NOT CHANGE.

#2. If you are struggling with your putting I am a big fan of trying to convert to lag putting.

#3. I have one major believe. You cannot have your cake and eat it too. It is really difficult to be a lag putter on the long ones and a bold putter on the short ones.

#4. Best tip if you are trying to convert to lag putting. FEEL AS THOU THE BALL IS GOING TO FALL INTO THE FRONT OF THE CUP!!!

5. Count how many three-putts you have from hitting your putts PAST the hole versus SHORT of the hole.

Do feel like this golfer? Just want to break that dang putter into pieces? Putting is considered very boring for most golfers. Golf tips to avoid 3 putts on the other hand should be listened to like “EF Hutton”. If you want to shoot lower golf scores, these golf putting tips will help you get there! All you’ve got to do is apply them the very next time you go out and play.

According to short game guru Dave Pelz, high handicappers are not good at the long (lag) putts. Detailed analysis shows poor lag putting is the root cause of bad putting. You may have other problems, too, but getting your lag-putting skills in shape is the best place to start. Pelz also says that your putts are too long. You must chip and pitch the ball closer to the hole.

Tip #1 Working on short game will quickly improve your bad putting.

Tip #2 Practice 50 foot putts for 30 minutes once per week. Try to get them in a 5 foot circle or less. This will ensure you will make your second putt.

Tip #3 Whatever your “make” range is, practice that distance for at least 20 minutes once per week. This could be the 5-6 foot circle you were trying to get your 50 foot lag putts in.

Tip #4 Hold head still. This is a big one. You can rotate it to the side to watch putt, but not until after you stroke the ball. Don’t lift your head up, nor do I want you to move it side-to-side. Just rotate it after the stroke.

If you need further help with your putting, Scott Meyers has put together a very comprehensive putting ebook that I’m confident will shave many strokes off your golf score.

I’d like to welcome you and thank you for stopping by my new Free Golf Tips blog. I’m excited to share simple online tips, drills, videos, resources and much more to help you quickly add power and distance to not only your drives, but every club in your bag.

I’ll be covering everything from putting, irons, driver, bunkers, golf swing technique for consistency and power; even as specific as clubface, as well as scoring, fitness and injuries; and maybe even some golf news for fun! You’ll also see some FREE Golf Video Tips that will help beginner golfers too!

We’ll also be building out a BIG section on Mental Golf. This, in my humble opinion, is 90% of the game, just ask Tiger Woods.

Having been online for 10 years helping golfers improve their golf swings, this is a chance to “give back” and help you for FREE. On occasion I will mention a resource that I feel will help you achieve longer drivers faster, but take my word for it, I will ONLY recommend resources I have thoroughly researched and tested myself, so consider me your research guy, so you don’t have to waist your valuable time surfing the net to learn about them, and worse yet, risk wasting your hard-earned money.
