Do you want to know the secret to how to compress a golf ball? Hint: Forward shaft lean! To hit it so solid it makes a sound your buddies gasp at? So crisp, you finally take a divot AFTER the ball and not before it? To get your ball to bore through any wind, and still maintain distance and accuracy?

Take a look at Woody Austin. I drew a white line to show you his forward shaft lean at impact. The camera angle isn’t the greatest, but notice his hands ahead of the ball.

The biggest issue with most amateurs and beginner golfers is getting the proper impact position. I know I fought it and did it wrong for the first 15 years of my golf career. I always wondered why I hit my irons thin, and weak to the right. Don’t get me wrong…weak for my high expectations.

I’ve got to get you to understand where your hands, shaft and clubhead should be at impact. I can guarantee many of you don’t get there, even if you think you do. I was one of those golfers in denial. I hit my irons pretty far, but not solid or compressed. They sounded clunky and thin. Not the kind of sound you’d be proud of, and trust me… I wasn’t.

I want to give you a few simple tips (swing thoughts) that helped me finally get the impact I was dreaming of. They may work for you too, but at least you will have some different ideas of how to achieve a compressed, crisply hit iron shot.

Golf Tip #1 Lead with your hands all the way through impact. This may sound extreme, but I can assure you, you will never get the forward shaft lean any other way. You must, must have your hands ahead of the ball with ALL your irons, and even your hybrids.

Golf Tip #2 Pull the butt of the club toward the ball in your downswing. Again, this is similar to golf tip number one, but it specifically refers to the downswing, not necessarily through impact.

Golf Tip #3 Hold your right wrist angle as long as you possibly can. This will give you that forward lean of your shaft. If you release your right wrist angle, you will not only lose that forward lean and get a backwards (flippy) lean of the shaft. The later is much more common with mid to high handicap golfers.

Okay… this site is all about simple golf! The three above tips is plenty on your plate, but will give you a strong sense and feel for the proper impact position with the forward lean of your golf shaft.

Learning how to correct a fade in your golf swing is one of the fastest ways to gain an extra 10 to 20 yards on your golf drives. A fade is a much better ball flight than a hook, so don’t fret too much if you are a fader of the golf ball, but if you don’t like this ball flight, I’ve got some tips that may help you hit either a straight golf ball or a draw.

Causes Of A Fade Golf Swing

There are several different causes of a fade. The first, most obvious one is an open clubface at impact. This will push the ball out to the right 90% of the time. Another cause may be an upper body dive during your downswing, which will get you ahead of the ball at impact, with no time to square the face, again leaving it open through impact. An over the top golf swing can also create a fade, as your swing path is outside to in, imparting sidespin on your golf ball. One last possible issue is a lateral slide towards the target with your lower body. This is similar to the upper body dive, in which you get ahead of the golf ball at impact, leaving the clubface wide open.

Use A Stronger Golf Grip

Many times a fade is the result of a weaker golf grip. So for a right handed golfer, that means the left hand is rotated to far to the left if you’re looking straight down at your golf grip. Many times you will only see one knuckle on your left hand, which is considered a weak, if not atleast a neutral golf grip. The proper golf grip is shown in the picture below. Notice how my left hand is rotated more to the right if you were to be looking down at it? This is considered a stronger golf grip (but could be even stronger, but I wouldn’t recommend it), which will close the clubface more rapidly through impact. This closing of the face will correct your fade and produce a straight or draw golf shot.

Square Your Clubface At Address

This may sound like a “duh” tip, but I can tell you after 15 years of playing golf, and currently playing to a 7 handicap, I recently found out my face was open at address. It blew me away, but the very second I made the correction, my ball flight and compression was 100% improved. I was absolutely amazed at how solid I was hitting the ball after I fixed my square clubface at address. If you’ve never seen how it looks to have a square face, take a look at the picture I took recently.

Hit Inside Quarter Of Golf Ball

Here’s a golf tip I got that helped me visualize impact. I was told to focus on hitting the inside quarter of the golf ball. So if you’re looking down at the golf ball, and you break the ball into fourths; the bottom right fourth is the area you are aiming at hitting. This will encourage an inside to out swing which will promote a slight draw if you release the club. If you don’t release it, it will go right.

See the arrow? That is your visual to where you want your clubface to contact the ball.

I hope you enjoyed the above tips to help correct a fade in your golf swing. If you did, you’ll want to download our 25 Free Golf Lessons to help you even more!

“You gotta make a full shoulder turn in your golf swing”. How many times has your teaching pro told you that one? I’ll bet more times than you can count on both hands and maybe your feet too. Learning how to make a full shoulder turn in golf is a bit misleading. There is a right way and many wrong ways to do it, and for most older golfers, it is nearly impossible to accomplish, but I’m going to give you a golf drill and some simple tips to make a full turn the very next time you go out and play.

If you are struggling to make a full turn in your golf swing, you may be going at it all wrong. We’ve got an easy way to fix your golf shoulder turn issue. Do not pay attention to where your arms and hands end up at the top of your backswing. They do not have to be above your head; and your club does not have to be parallel in order to have a full, 90 degree shoulder turn.

Zach Johnson is a solid striker of the golf ball, and right in there in the distance category, and yet most viewers would say he has a short backswing. I can tell you he does NOT! If you look at his top of the backswing position, his shoulders are turned more than the accepted 90 degrees, he just doesn’t want his hands to get to high or disconnected at the top. This is a great model to use if you struggle with your range of motion; or you have shoulder flexibility issues that won’t let you get to the top of your backswing anyways.

Look at the white line across his shoulders. That is a full (over 90 degress) shoulder turn. Look at the yellow line. Notice how his left arm is barely above parallel to the ground. This is profound. Your left arm does not have to go way up to make a full shoulder turn. This is how to get power in your golf swing.

Golf Shoulder “Secret” Tip

I want you to stand up right now. Grab an imaginary golf club; get in your address position, and this time, instead of focusing on your lead shoulder during your backswing, I want you to get your “right” shoulder moving backward and behind you as soon as you start your takeaway. You will be shocked at the lack of tension you feel, and how easy it is to make a full shoulder turn.

The majority of golfers struggle to make a full shoulder turn in their golf swing because of undo tension in their “lead” shoulder. Instead rotate your RIGHT shoulder back immediately and low and behold you now have a tension-free, full shoulder turn.

Also, don’t discount your range of motion. Improving in golf by stretching is an effective and much needed approach, especially if you are an older golfer with declining flexibility.

This is a short, sweet, but very valuable article on how to improve your golf swing, especially driving accuracy. I was reading a Golf Magazine article with David Toms who is number one in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour. It was a quick read, but for any of you who struggle to find the fairway off the tea, you will do yourself justice to read these simple golf tips.

Simple Golf Driving Tips For Accuracy

Tip #1 – Make your target smaller and beyond just the fairway. I know for me, I look at the fairway and in my mind, say “just hit the fairway” and many times I don’t. By picking a smaller target beyond the fairway, like a tree or power pole, you are telling your mind to hit something more precise, so if you miss it, you are still in the fairway!

Golf Tip #2 – Eliminate tension before your swing. I know this one may sound quite obvious, but I know for me, I will get on a tight hole, and synch up like a not, and end up hitting out OB or into an unplayable situation. Here’s 2 things that have helped me. Waggle your club in the same manner as the swing you want to hit, then place it behind the ball. Without any hesitation take it back and make your golf swing. You will give your mind NO TIME to think about it, and you will be tension-free!

Golf Tip #3 – Swing within yourself. This is a BIGGY! You cannot swing outside of your physical capabilities thinking your going to kill it. This creates more tension and tension will redirect your club “off path” and impact will be inconsistent. One easy way to swing within yourself, is to say you are going to swing at 60%. This will promote an effortless swing with solid ball contact. That contact will give you greater distance and accuracy…so don’t be surprised if your ball goes FARTHER than normal. This will be an eye-opener for you!

Many beginner and high handicap golfers want to know what the correct golf wrist cock is. Although this is very important to get right, having a proper golf grip will ensure you execute your wrist golf properly.

Issues With An Improper Golf Grip

If you have too strong of a left hand, you will have too much cup in your wrists at the top of your swing. This may cause you to overcock your wrists, and come across the line at the top, causing a whole host of issues coming down. If your golf grip is too weak, it may cause an excess bowing of your left wrist which will result in a shut clubface both at the top of your golf swing and at impact, resulting in some brutal pulls to the left. Learning how to grip a golf club is critical to making the correct golf wrist cock that promotes maximum wrist lag.

Proper Golf Wrist Cock

The proper golf wrist cock is very simple. You do not want to manipulate your wrists in any way, or you will have as mentioned above either too much cup in your wrists or excessing bow in them. With the proper grip on your golf club, you should be able to get in your address position, and without doing anything, just raise your clubhed straight off the ground vertically. You will do this by correctly cocking your wrists straight up.

When you’ve reached your maximum wrist cock, stop, hold it, and take a look at it. That is a perfect golf wrist cock that will encourage wrist lag and power into your golf swing.

Preset Golf Wrist Cock

This is where it gets fun. I do this all the time, and actually hit balls from this position. Once you get the proper wrist cock as described above, now just rotate the shaft to your right until it is parallel and right on top of your toe line. This is a perfect position to be in to just rotate back to an absolute beautiful “text book” top of the backswing position, with the correct and proper amount of wrist cock. At the top you will notice you are still parallel with your toe (target) line, putting you into a perfect position coming down.

That’s all there is to it!

Every golfer on the planet wants to know the secret to how to drive a golf ball far and straight. Well…there are no “secrets”, but there are several key components that need to be in place to maximize your driving distance, and any below golf driving tip will help.

Golf Driving Tips

Tip #1 Tee your golf ball off your inside heel of your lead foot.

Tip #2 Get a slight spine tilt away from target at address, and maintain it all the way through impact.

Tip #3 Work on improving your golf grip. A strong golf grip will encourage an aggressive rotation of the clubface through impact, encouraging a golf draw, that will land and roll 30 more yards.

Tip #4 Make sure you are lined up “parallel” to target line. So your feet, knees, hips and shoulders should be parallel to your end target. This will ensure a straight golf ball with every drive.

Tip #5 Square clubface at impact. It can be slightly open if you are coming from the inside, which would make it square to your path going into the golf ball.

Tip #6 Swing to a full and balanced finish with all your weight on your lead foot (heel), and with your hips and chest facing the target.

Give these simple golf driving tips a go and I’ll bet you hit your drives longer and straight!

The hardest concept for beginner golfers is to learn how to hit down on golf ball. This is the only way to compress the ball solidly and get a consistent ball fall with maximum distance. Any other technique of hitting the golf ball will result in a very inconsistent golf swing, with swing faults like topped, thin, chunked and even shanked golf balls happening often.

Here’s a picture of Tiger Woods. It’s not the clearest picture, but I want you to notice a few things, and apply these golf tips to your iron golf swing next time you go out and hit balls. Do not try this on the course without doing it in practice first.

Tip #1 Your hands and butt of the club MUST be ahead of the golf ball at impact.

Tip#2 Forward shaft lean. This is where most beginner golfers mess it up. The get no shaft lean at impact, meaning they are throwing (flipping) the clubhead at the ball in a scooping fashion. This is death to the golf swing.

Tip #3 Move ball back in stance slightly with mid to short irons. Don’t be drastic with this, but many beginner golfers have the ball too far forward making it nearly impossible to keep your hands and butt of club ahead of the ball with an improper ball position.

Tip #4 Preset Impact Position. Before you hit every shot on the range with your wedges I want you to get into your impact position. Hands ahead of ball, hips rotated towards target. Get into this position, set it, then take your backswing and hit ball. I took a an overhead shot of what this preset impact should look like. I think it will be an eye-opener for you.

It may look like the ball is way back in my stance, but that is an illusion. In the proper impact position, you’ve rotated your hips, and put 90% of your weight on your left side, so a lot of motion and momentum is now ahead of the ball…ACCEPT…my head, upper body, and my spine tilt is still away from the target.

Also, look at the lines I’ve drawn. The thin white line is a square clubface at impact. Most beginner golfers have it wide open and that’s why they slice the golf ball. The solid white line is showing proper angle of the shaft from looking above. Notice the angle. The yellow line is where most amateur golfers are at impact. Straight which results in a flipping of the club at impact, adding loft, possibly causing a thin or bladed shot, and definitely a loss of distance.

Do feel like this golfer? Just want to break that dang putter into pieces? Putting is considered very boring for most golfers. Golf tips to avoid 3 putts on the other hand should be listened to like “EF Hutton”. If you want to shoot lower golf scores, these golf putting tips will help you get there! All you’ve got to do is apply them the very next time you go out and play.

According to short game guru Dave Pelz, high handicappers are not good at the long (lag) putts. Detailed analysis shows poor lag putting is the root cause of bad putting. You may have other problems, too, but getting your lag-putting skills in shape is the best place to start. Pelz also says that your putts are too long. You must chip and pitch the ball closer to the hole.

Tip #1 Working on short game will quickly improve your bad putting.

Tip #2 Practice 50 foot putts for 30 minutes once per week. Try to get them in a 5 foot circle or less. This will ensure you will make your second putt.

Tip #3 Whatever your “make” range is, practice that distance for at least 20 minutes once per week. This could be the 5-6 foot circle you were trying to get your 50 foot lag putts in.

Tip #4 Hold head still. This is a big one. You can rotate it to the side to watch putt, but not until after you stroke the ball. Don’t lift your head up, nor do I want you to move it side-to-side. Just rotate it after the stroke.

EXCELLENT PUTTING RESOURCE

If you need further help with your putting, Scott Meyers has put together a very comprehensive putting ebook that I’m confident will shave many strokes off your golf score.

If you want to have a consistent golf swing sequence that produces solid, powerful shots for 18 holes, your downswing is your defining moment. Learning how to start your golf downswing is huge! Implementing simple golf tips to create a proper downswing is what this article is all about.

I don’t believe in complexity or confusion. I believe in simple, easy-to-implement golf tips you can use RIGHT NOW to see improvement. We make the golf swing hard enough, we don’t need to add to it, we need to break it down into simple steps that you can achieve quickly and effortlessly.

There are many theories of how the downswing should occur. Some are way out there, and others are somewhat sound, but hard to do. There are some key elements that need to be in place to make your downswing sequence correct, so you come into impact in the best position possible to deliver a solid blow to the golf ball, with tons of compression.

Tip 1 From the top, shift your weight to your lead side, but not by sliding, but with a slight hip bump towards the target. Also, focus on learning how to slow down your golf swing from the transition.

Tip 2 Focus on no head movement laterally! So your weight is now left, but your head is in the same spot.

Tip 3 After you’ve shifted your weight, your hips start to rotate, but with no upper body rotation…yet.

Tip 4 As your hips are rotating, your arms are dropping into the slot for an inside attack on the golf ball.

Tip 5 Feel like your right elbow is coming down and into your right side, which will promote an on-plane golf swing. This is a Hogan move.

Tip 6 Retain your wrist angle (lag) as you continue to rotate your hips and your shoulders, now that you’ve dropped into the slot.

Tip 7 Fire your right side hard! There’s no holding back now. You can hit as hard as you want with the right side, including your right shoulder.

Okay…I hope the above golf tips for downswing makes sense to you, and you are able to implement some of these tips and see an improved downswing sequence, and solid golf shots.
